Trainer Q&A - Other Training Questions - What is the best solution for an older horse that lays down when ridden or worked?

What is the best solution for an older horse that lays down when ridden or worked?

Sylvia Asks:

I have an 11 year old quarter horse which I have had about 6 months. I have just started riding her a couple times a week. I have started to notice that when she gets stressed out over a situation that she doesn't want to be in or do. She LAYS DOWN !!! Doesn't matter if your on her or on the ground doing ground manners with her. If I try to get her to do something she doesn't want to do. She lays down and won't get up for ANYTHING. She will get up when she is ready to get up. How do I break her of this. I don't no much about this horse. I do know she had 3 different owners before I got her. She is very sweet other than this one vice that I have found so far. Please tell me what I can do to get her on the right track.......
Thanks
Sylvia

Our Trainer Answers:

At the age that your mare is now, and the dangerous behavior she is displaying, the only advice that I can recommend is to find a professional trainer who has experience dealing with this particular vice. I would also recommend contacting her former owners, if possible, to see if this is a new problem or a continuing behavior.
