Trainer Q&A - Behavior Problems & Quirks - How can I cause my horse to be easier to catch?

How can I cause my horse to be easier to catch?

Missbreck Asks:

Hi: My horse is hard to catch in a pen when I want to ride. Can you give me a suggestion?

Our Trainer Answers:

One way to cause your horse to become easier to catch is by only feeding grain after you halter him. Each morning in your daily feeding routine you need to halter your horse before you feed him. I suggest catching him and leading him to another area, such as a stall, or another pen,  and feeding him there. When he associates the halter and lead rope with an enjoyable experience (such as feeding) instead of work (such as riding), he will become amazingly easy to catch!

Thank You and Happy Trails!
