Bavarian Classic

The Bavarian Classic is a Group 3 flat horse race in Germany which is open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Munich over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late May or early June.

The event was established in 1969, and in the early part of its history it was called the Grosser Hertie-Preis. Its distance was frequently modified during this period, ranging from 1,850 to 2,200 metres. The race was given Group 2 status in 1977, and from this point it began a more sustained spell over 2,200 metres.

After several short-term title changes, the event became known as the Grosser Müller-Brot-Preis in 1997. Its length was cut to 2,000 metres in 1998, and it was downgraded to Group 3 level in 2004. Since then it has been known by its present title, the Bavarian Classic.
