Blandford Stakes

The Blandford Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Ireland which is open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September.

The event is named after the Irish-bred racehorse Blandford, a leading sire in the 1930s. It was formerly open to horses of either gender, and for a period it was contested over 1 mile and 4 furlongs. In the early 1990s it was classed at Group 2 level, and it was held in mid October.

The distance of the Blandford Stakes was cut to 1 mile and 3 furlongs in 1994. It was relegated to Group 3 level and brought forward to September in 1999. It was restricted to fillies and mares in 2001, and at the same time it was shortened to 1 mile and 2 furlongs. The race was promoted back to Group 2 status in 2004.
