Derby Italiano

The Derby Italiano is a Group 2 flat horse race in Italy which is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Capannelle, Rome, over a distance of 2,200 metres (about 1 mile and 3 furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in May.

The event is the Italian version of the English Derby, and it was first run in 1884. It was originally reserved for horses born and bred in Italy, but this restriction was lifted in 1981. When the present system of race grading was introduced in the early 1970s, the Derby Italiano was classed at the highest level, Group 1. It was downgraded to Group 2 level in 2009, but with a prize fund of €814,000 it remains the most valuable race in Italy [1]. Prior to 2008 the distance of the event was 2,400 metres.
