Deutsches Derby

The Deutsches Derby is a Group 1 flat horse race in Germany which is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Horner Rennbahn, Hamburg, over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July.

The event is the German version of the Derby Stakes, and it was originally restricted to German-bred horses only. It was first run in 1869, and it was initially called the Norddeutsches Derby. This was changed to the present title in 1889. For most of its history the race has been held at Hamburg, but it has also been temporarily staged at Grunewald (1919), Hoppegarten (1943–44), Munich (1946) and Cologne (1947). During World War II it was known as the Grosser Deutschlandpreis der Dreijährigen.

The present European race-grading system began to include German races in 1972, and the Deutsches Derby was classed at the highest level, Group 1. The exclusion of foreign-bred horses was discontinued in 1993.
