Deutschland-Preis

The Deutschland-Preis is a Group 1 flat horse race in Germany which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Düsseldorf over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July.

The event was established in 1888, and it was originally contested at Hoppegarten. During the early part of its history it was called the Grosser Preis von Berlin, and it was initially run over 2,000 metres. This was extended to 2,200 metres in 1897, and to 2,400 metres when the race was transferred to Grunewald in 1909. Its length was increased to 2,600 metres in 1927. The event returned to Hoppegarten in 1934, and three years later it was given a new title, the Grosser Preis der Reichshauptstadt. At this point its distance was cut to 2,400 metres, and this was changed back to 2,600 metres in 1943.

The race was relaunched at Düsseldorf in 1947 with a different name, the Grosser Preis von Nordrhein-Westfalen. The first running was over 2,400 metres, and this was extended to 2,600 metres the following year. Its present distance, a return to 2,400 metres, was introduced in 1965. The European system of race grading expanded to include Germany in 1972, and this event was classed at the highest level, Group 1. It reverted to its original title, the Grosser Preis von Berlin, in 1977, and it became known as the Deutschland-Preis in 1996.
