Southern Cross Stakes


The Southern Cross Stakes is a Group 3 Australian Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged 3 years old and upwards, over a distance of 1200 metres.

It is held annually at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

1940 - 1972 held over 6 furlongs (approx. 1200m)
1973 onwards held over 1200m.

1940 - 1979 was as a Principal race.</br> 1980 - 1988 was as a Listed race.</br> 1989 onwards Group 3 race.</br>

1940 - 1992 the race was known as the ‘Frederick Clissold Handicap’
1993 the race was known as the ‘Anniversary Cup’
1994 the race was known as the ‘Frederick Clissold Handicap’
1995 the race was known as the ‘Frederick Clissold Quality’
1996 - 1998 the race was known as the ‘Frederick Clissold Handicap’
1999 - 2002 the race was known as the ‘Frederick Clissold Stakes’
2003 the race was known as the ‘Premier Express Freight Stakes’
2004 - 2008 the race was known as the ‘Frederick Clissold Stakes’
2009 onwards the race has been called the ‘Southern Cross Stakes’
