The Prix du Jockey Club, sometimes referred to as the French Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in France which is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Chantilly over a distance of 2,100 metres (about 1 mile and 2½ furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early June.

History

The event was inspired by the Derby Stakes in England, and it was named in homage to that country's Jockey Club based at Newmarket. It was first run on April 24, 1836, and it was originally restricted to horses born and bred in France. Its distance was initially set at 2,500 metres, and this was cut to 2,400 metres in 1843. The race departed from its regular venue during the 1848 French Revolution, when it was switched at short notice to Versailles. It was not run in 1871 due to the Franco-Prussian War.

The race was abandoned in 1915, but for the remaining years of World War I there was a substitute event titled the Prix des Trois Ans. This was held at Moulins in 1916, Chantilly in 1917 and Maisons-Laffitte in 1918. The Prix du Jockey Club resumed the following year with the first of two post-war runnings at Longchamp.

There were further disruptions during World War II. A replacement race with a distance of 2,600 metres took place at Auteuil in 1940, and this was called the Prix de Chantilly. For the following two years the Prix du Jockey Club was contested at Longchamp, with a record number of 28 runners in 1942. It was run over 2,300 metres at Le Tremblay in 1943 and 1944, and it then returned to Longchamp for three more years. The event was opened to foreign participants in 1946. It was moved back to Chantilly in 1948.

When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix du Jockey Club was classed at the highest level, Group 1. The first foreign-trained horse to win was Assert in 1982, who was trained in Ireland by David O'Brien. The race's distance was cut to 2,100 metres in 2005. The fastest winning time over its current length is 2m 5.8s, which was recorded by Darsi in 2006.

The Prix du Jockey Club and the English Derby are usually run in close succession, and it is rare for any horse to compete in both events. No horse has ever won both races, although the 1878 winner of the French version, Insulaire, went on to finish runner-up in the Derby three days later. The winner of the Prix du Jockey Club in 1999, Montjeu, is the most recent of four to also achieve victory in the Irish Derby. Nine winners have subsequently won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (first run in 1920), and the latest of these was Dalakhani in 2003.
