History

The event was established in 1865, and it was originally open to horses aged three or older. It was named after its trophy, an objet d'art which was worth 10,000 francs at the time of its launch. The race was abandoned in 1871 because of the Franco-Prussian War. Having been initially contested over 3,200 metres, its distance was cut to 3,000 metres in 1895.

La Coupe was cancelled from 1915 to 1919 due to World War I. It was temporarily switched to alternative venues during World War II, with brief periods at Le Tremblay (1943) and Maisons-Laffitte (1944–45). The minimum age of participating horses was raised to four in 1969, and simultaneously the length of the race was reduced to 2,600 metres.

The race's distance was shortened again in 1980, to 2,400 metres. That year's running took place at Chantilly, and the event later returned to this venue for two more spells, 1982–83 and 1985–86. It was cut to 2,100 metres in 1991, and to the present length, 2,000 metres, in 1993. The race departed from its regular venue for three years during the mid 1990s. It was moved to Saint-Cloud in 1994, Evry in 1995 and then back to Saint-Cloud in 1996.
