Minstrel Stakes

The Minstrel Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Ireland which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July.

The event is named after The Minstrel, a highly-successful Irish-trained racehorse in 1976 and 1977. It was formerly held in the spring at Phoenix Park, and it used to be restricted to horses aged three. For a period it was classed at Listed level, and its distance was 1 mile.

The Minstrel Stakes was transferred to the Curragh in 1991. Simultaneously it was opened to older horses and switched to July. It was promoted to its present status, Group 3, in 1996. It was cut to 7 furlongs in 2001, and the minimum age of participating horses was raised to four in 2002. Three-year-olds were re-admitted to the race in 2007.
