History

The event was established in 1882, and it was originally called the Prix du Rond Point. It was initially contested over 2,200 metres, but its distance was modified several times thereafter. It was shortened to 2,000 metres in 1891, and then extended to 2,100 metres in 1903. It was restored to 2,000 metres in 1909.

The Prix du Rond Point was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1914 to 1919. It was raced over 1,600 metres in 1921, and it began a more prolonged spell over 1,700 metres in 1922. The event was cancelled twice during World War II, in 1939 and 1940. It was temporarily switched to Maisons-Laffitte in 1943, and to Le Tremblay in 1944.

The distance of the Prix du Rond Point was altered several times in the 1950s. It was cut to 1,600 metres in 1953, and it briefly returned to 1,700 metres in 1958. The length was set at 1,400 metres the following year, and this was maintained until the present distance, 1,600 metres, was introduced in 1969.

When the current system of race grading began in 1971, the Prix du Rond Point was classed at Group 3 level. At this time it was held in early September. From 1980 it was run later that month, and in 1987 it was moved to the first Sunday in October, the same day as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. The Prix du Rond Point was promoted to Group 2 status in 1990. It was switched to the Saturday of the "Arc" meeting in 2001.

The race was given its present title, the Prix Daniel Wildenstein, in 2002. This was in memory of Daniel Wildenstein (1917–2001), an art dealer who was a leading racehorse owner and breeder. He was a champion owner in all three disciplines of the sport – flat racing nine times, jump racing fourteen times and harness racing seven times. He won this race twice, with Faraway Son (1971) and Monsanto (1976).
