History

The Prix Daphnis was established in 1921 alongside an equivalent race for fillies, the Prix Chloe. The two events were named after the characters Daphnis and Chloe from a work by the Greek novelist Longus, popularised in France by the translation of Paul-Louis Courier. Both races were originally held at Le Tremblay and took place in mid April. The Prix Daphnis served as a trial for the Poule d'Essai des Poulains two weeks later.

During World War II the Prix Daphnis was temporarily moved to an alternative venue, Longchamp, from 1940 to 1942. It returned to Le Tremblay in 1943. It was rescheduled in 1961 to take place on the eve of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, and consequently, as it was no longer a trial, its importance gradually reduced. Le Tremblay closed in 1967, and the event was transferred back to Longchamp in 1968. It continued here for a short period, and it moved to its next long-term home, Evry, in 1973.

The Prix Daphnis was given a new slot — July — in 1977. With the exception of a single running at Longchamp in 1981, the race remained at Evry until 1995. For the next decade its venue regularly switched between Maisons-Laffitte (1996–98, 2002–03) and Chantilly (1999–2001, 2004). The present spell at Longchamp began in 2005, and since then it has taken place in late June.
