History

The event was established in 1902, and it was originally held at Maisons-Laffitte. It was named after Fille de l'Air, a highly successful French-trained filly in the 1860s.

The race was initially contested over 2,400 metres, and it was extended to 2,600 metres in 1906. It reverted to its former length in 1913, and it was cut to 2,000 metres the following year. The event was abandoned from 1915 to 1919 because of World War I. It was transferred to Saint-Cloud in 1921, and it was restored to 2,400 metres in 1924. Its present distance, 2,100 metres, was introduced in 1929.

The race was cancelled twice during World War II, in 1940 and 1941. Its regular venue was closed during this period, so it was switched temporarily to Longchamp (1942, 1945), Le Tremblay (1943) and Auteuil (1944).

When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix Fille de l'Air was classed at Group 3 level. For a period it took place in June. It was moved to late October in 1990, and to November in 1991. The race was staged at Evry in 1995 and 1996, and it was transferred to Toulouse in 1997. It is now usually run on November 11, the French public holiday of Armistice Day.
