History

The event was established in 1949, and it was originally held at Saint-Cloud. It was initially called the Prix de Messidor, a name derived from the Latin word messis, which means "harvest". There was no running in 1952, and the present version of the title, without the "de", was first used in 1955. The Prix Messidor was not run from 1957 to 1959.

For a period beginning in the 1960s the race was frequently switched between two different venues. There were brief spells at both Maisons-Laffitte (1963–65, 1968–69) and Saint-Cloud (1966–67, 1970–72). A more prolonged period at Maisons-Laffitte began in 1973.

The Prix Messidor was transferred to Deauville in 1997, and it moved back to Maisons-Laffitte in 2005. The distance of the race has stayed the same throughout its history.
