History

The event was established in 1925, and it was originally called the "Prix de Minerve". It was named after Minerva (French name Minerve), the Roman goddess of crafts and wisdom. In the early part of its history it was held at Le Tremblay, and its distance was 2,000 metres.

There was no running in 1940 because of World War II. For the remainder of the war it was switched to alternative venues, with spells at Maisons-Laffitte (1941–43) and Auteuil (1944). Throughout this time the race was contested over 2,100 metres. It returned to Le Tremblay in 1945, and its former distance was restored in 1946. The event was staged at Longchamp from 1948 to 1950, and on the last two occasions it was run over 2,100 metres. Thereafter it continued at Le Tremblay until the track closed in 1967.

The Prix de Minerve began a five-year period at Chantilly in 1968, and it was then transferred to Evry in 1973. The distance of the event was extended to 2,400 metres in 1976. The present title, without the "de", was introduced in 1987. The race took place at Saint-Cloud in 1993, but it otherwise remained at Evry until the closure of the venue in 1996. The following year it moved to Deauville – the eighth racecourse to have staged the event. At this point its length was increased to 2,500 metres.
