History

The event is named after Fontainebleau Forest, an area to the southeast of Paris which is the location of the Hippodrome de la Solle racecourse. The Société d'Encouragement organised an annual race meeting at this venue from 1862 to 1891, and introduced the Prix de Fontainebleau at Longchamp in 1889. The original distance was 2,200 metres, and it was initially restricted to horses which had not raced previously that year.

The modern version of the Prix de Fontainebleau began in 1952, and it was initially contested over 1,600 metres. It was designed to serve as a trial for the first colts' Classics, and the inaugural winner Thunderhead II achieved victory in the 2,000 Guineas Stakes. Its distance was modified several times for a period in the 1960s, which started with a cut to 1,400 metres in 1965. It was shortened to 1,300 metres in 1966, extended to 1,500 metres in 1967, and restored to 1,600 metres in 1968.

When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix de Fontainebleau was classed at Group 3 level. Sixteen winners of the current version have won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, and the most recent was Silver Frost in 2009.
