History

The event was established in 1865, and it was originally run at Longchamp over 2,000 metres. It was named in memory of Antoine-Héraclius-Geneviève-Agénor (1789–1855), the Duc de Guiche (and later the Duc de Gramont), who founded the successful Haras de Meudon stud farm. The Prix de Guiche was cancelled in 1871 because of the Franco-Prussian War. For the 1873 and 1901 runnings its distance was extended to 2,200 metres. It was abandoned throughout World War I, with no race from 1915 to 1918.

During World War II, in 1944 and 1945, the Prix de Guiche was temporarily switched to an alternative venue, Maisons-Laffitte. Its distance was cut to 1,950 metres in 1953, and with the exception of two brief periods over 1,850 metres (1963 and 1965–67), it continued at this length until 1986. A more prolonged spell over 1,850 metres began in 1987.

In 2005 the Prix de Guiche was transferred to its present venue, Chantilly, and its distance was cut to 1,800 metres. The race often serves as a trial for the Prix du Jockey Club, and the most recent horse to win both events was Lawman in 2007.
