The Prix de Royallieu is a Group 2 flat horse race in France which is open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 2,500 metres (about 1 mile and 4½ furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late September or early October.

History

The original version of the event was open to horses of either gender aged three or above. It was contested over 3,000 metres at Longchamp in late October. It was named after Royallieu, an area of forest close to the town of Compiègne. This was the location of the stables used by Frédéric de Lagrange, a successful racehorse owner and breeder in the late 19th century. The race was restricted to three-year-old fillies in 1922, and at the same time its distance was cut to 2,600 metres.

The Prix de Royallieu was cancelled in 1939 and 1940 because of World War II. For the following two years it was temporarily switched to Le Tremblay, where it was run over 2,500 metres. It returned to Longchamp in 1943.

The event was opened to older fillies and mares in 1965. When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix de Royallieu was classed at Group 3 level. Its regular distance was reduced to 2,500 metres in 1972.

The race was promoted to Group 2 status in 1988. Simultaneously it was moved to its current calendar position – the Saturday of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe weekend. The "Arc" itself takes place on the first Sunday in October.
