History

The event was first run on May 13, 1883, and it was originally contested over 2,100 metres. It was named after Royaumont Abbey, which is located 12 km from Chantilly. It was initially reserved for fillies considered to be below the standard required for the Prix de Diane, which used to be run on the same day.

The Prix de Royaumont was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918. The first two post-war editions were staged at Longchamp, and it then returned to Chantilly in 1921. The race was cancelled only once during World War II, in 1940, and thereafter it was temporarily switched to alternative venues. In 1941 and 1942 it was held at Longchamp, and in 1943 and 1944 it was run over 2,150 metres at Le Tremblay. It then returned to Longchamp for three more years before moving back to Chantilly in 1948.

The 1975 running of the Prix de Royaumont was called off because of a strike by stable lads. A new schedule was introduced in 1978, and the race was moved to a date earlier than that of the Prix de Diane. The event began a period away from Chantilly in 1987, when it was switched to Longchamp. It continued here until 1990, and it was then transferred to Saint-Cloud in 1991. The race's present distance, 2,400 metres, was set in 1992. It remained at Saint-Cloud until 1996, and it then returned to Chantilly the following season. The only subsequent departure came in 2001, when it was run for a single year at Saint-Cloud.
