History

The event was established in 1906, and it was originally open to horses aged two or older. Its distance was initially set at 1,400 metres. In its early years it was held at Maisons-Laffitte, which was then part of the former French department of Seine-et-Oise.

The Prix de Seine-et-Oise was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1914 to 1918. It was temporarily switched to Saint-Cloud in 1920. It started a longer period at the latter venue in 1929, and at the same time it was cut to 1,300 metres.

The race was cancelled twice during World War II, in 1939 and 1940. Its regular venue was closed at this time, so it was moved briefly to Maisons-Laffitte (1941, 1943–45) and Le Tremblay (1942). It was extended to 1,400 metres in 1944, but it reverted to 1,300 metres the following year. In the post-war period, from 1946 to 1951, it was usually held at Saint-Cloud. The one exception was the 1948 running, which took place at Longchamp.

The Prix de Seine-et-Oise was transferred back to Maisons-Laffitte in 1952, and simultaneously it was cut to 1,200 metres. When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, it was classed at Group 3 level. The minimum age of participating horses was raised to three in 1981, and for a period it took place in mid September. It was run at Chantilly in 1995, and again from 1997 to 2000. It was moved to its current slot, late October or early November, in 2002.
