The Prix de la Salamandre was a Group 1 flat horse race in France which was open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It was run at Longchamp over a distance of 1,400 metres (about 7 furlongs), and it was scheduled to take place each year in September.

History

The event was established in 1872, and it was originally held at Chantilly. It was transferred to Longchamp in 1900, and at that time it offered prize money of 10,000 francs. This was increased to 15,000 francs in 1908.

When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix de la Salamandre was classed at the highest level, Group 1.

The governing body of French racing, France Galop, restructured its program of Group 1 races for juveniles in 2001. The Prix de la Salamandre was discontinued, and its distance was adopted by the Grand Critérium (now titled the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère).
