History

The event was established in 1882, and for most of its history it has been run over 1,600 metres at Longchamp. Its original title has remained unchanged – the English translation of Chênes is "Oaks".

The Prix des Chênes was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1914 to 1919. It was cancelled three times during World War II, in 1939, 1940 and 1944. It was temporarily switched to Le Tremblay in 1943. Its distance was cut to 1,400 metres in 1964, but it reverted to 1,600 metres in 1966.

For a short period the Prix des Chênes took place away from Longchamp. Three venues briefly hosted the event – Saint-Cloud (1989–90, 1994) , Evry (1991–93) and Chantilly (1995). During this time it was also open to fillies. The race returned to Longchamp in 1996, and it was once again restricted to male horses.

The Prix des Chênes has traditionally served as a trial for the Grand Critérium (now known as the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère). However, recent winners have usually appeared next in the Critérium International.
