The Prix du Cadran is a Group 1 flat horse race in France which is open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 4,000 metres (about 2½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early October.

It is the most prestigious race in France for "stayers" – those horses which specialise in racing over long distances. The equivalent event in Great Britain is the Gold Cup, which is run at Royal Ascot in June.

History

The Prix du Cadran was first run on April 27, 1837. It was named after a clock face (French word cadran) at the École Militaire, which is located next to the race's original venue, the Champ de Mars. It is the second oldest horse race in France which is still known by its original title, behind the Prix du Jockey Club (established in 1836). The event was initially contested over one and a quarter laps of the Champs de Mars, a distance of 2,500 metres. The inaugural running offered a prize fund of 3,000 francs. It was extended to 4,000 metres in 1843, and then to 4,200 metres in 1846.

The Prix du Cadran was temporarily switched to Versailles during the 1848 French Revolution. It was not run in 1850, and it underwent several changes in the following decade. Its distance was frequently modified between 1851 and 1857, and it was restricted to four-year-olds in 1854. The race was moved to Longchamp in 1857, and it reverted to 4,200 metres in 1858.

The Prix du Cadran was cancelled in 1871 because of the Franco-Prussian War. Its distance was cut to 4,000 metres in 1913, and at the same time it was opened to horses aged five or older. It was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918.

The event was cancelled only once during World War II, in 1940. It was transferred to Le Tremblay from 1943 to 1945, where it was contested over 4,100 metres. The only subsequent cancellation came in 1968.

When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix du Cadran was classed at the highest level, Group 1. At this time it took place in late May. It was opened to geldings in 1986, and it was moved to a new calendar position, the Saturday of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe weekend, in 1991. It is now usually run on the first Sunday in October, the same day as the "Arc".
