History

The Prix du Moulin was one of two major races which were introduced in 1957 to celebrate the centenary of Longchamp Racecourse. Both of these initially took place on the first Sunday in October, the same day as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. The other race, the Prix de l'Abbaye, is still held at that meeting, but the date of the Prix du Moulin has since been changed twice. It was brought forward to the last Sunday in September in 1974, and to the first Sunday of that month in 1980.

The event is named after the Moulin de Longchamp, a windmill which stands within the grounds of the racecourse. This windmill was originally part of an abbey, and its foundation stone was laid by King Saint Louis in 1256. The mill was destroyed during the French Revolution, but it was reconstructed when the racecourse was built in 1856.

From its launch until 1986 the Prix du Moulin took place on Longchamp's middle course (the moyenne piste). It was switched to the main course (the grande piste) in 1987.

The race is often contested by horses which ran previously in the Prix Jacques Le Marois. The most recent to win both events in the same year was Librettist in 2006.
