Rheinland-Pokal

The Rheinland-Pokal is a Group 1 flat horse race in Germany which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Galopprennbahn Cologne-Weidenpesch, Cologne over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August.

The event was established in 1957, and it was originally called the Aral-Pokal. In the early part of its history it was held at Gelsenkirchen, and the first three runnings were contested over 2,600 metres. The European race-grading system started to include German events in 1972, and the Aral-Pokal was classed at Group 2 level. It was promoted to Group 1 status in 1973.

From 1998 to 2000 the race was known as the "Grosser Erdgas-Preis". It was transferred to Cologne in 2001, where it was initially titled the "Credit-Suisse Private Banking Pokal". This was changed to the present name in 2004.
