Suraj Narredu

Suraj Narredu (born 7 February 1985), is a licensed Indian jockey based in Bangalore. Part of the horse racing circuit for almost a decade and a licensed jockey for the last 8 years, Narredu comes from family which been involved in horseracing over three generations. His father Satish Narredu is a senior horse trainer and his uncle Malesh Narredu a champion jockey.[1] Suraj races in Bangalore, Mysore, Pune and Mumbai, all major hubs of this equestrian-lifestyle sport in India. He also rides internationally and is a regular across major South-East Asian race hubs. In December 2009, he won the Mauritius Turf Club's Prestigious Rising Star Championship.[2]

He won the Delhi Derby in January 2010, and was expected to win at the Kingfisher Derby held in Bangalore on July 11, 2010 riding tote favorite 'Sun Kingdom'.[3] Although he lost to international jockey Richard Hughes in Bangalore,[4] Narredu is all set to become the youngest Indian jockey to join the 1000 winners club.[5]

Suraj started riding at the BARI riding school in Bangalore at the age of 12. This school has produced top Indian jockeys like Y.S.Srinath and K.P.G. Appu. His father and uncle did not approve of his getting into the game, probably because they knew how fickle this sport can be but nevertheless, Suraj decided to go ahead and become a jockey as a teenager. [6]

Narredu is a big fan of Italian jockey Frankie Dettori. Dettori's ‘Magnificent 7’ tape where he won the entire race card at Royal Ascot racecourse in 1996 is the most inspiring moment for Suraj. Apart from heading towards becoming India's youngest jockey to notch up a 1000-winners, Suraj also wants to emulate Dettori's race card. [7]
